This is an amazing mystery thriller with a twist at the end that you don't see coming at all! At times this book is quite a page turner & at other times the plot seems rather convoluted. Bosnians vs Serbians, vs Jews, vs prosecutors, CIA, and FBI.
I look forward to more Jaywalker stories. If you like good stories and police/courtroom procedurals, then you'll enjoy reading this well crafted story. All this is expertly paced, unfurling before the book is half finished; a reader can guess what is coming. I got a little confused there toward the end about who exactly was screwing with whom and (especially) why. A fantastic read..I really couldn't put it down. The main characters are serious in their pursuit of justice & in some of the personal issues they face made even worse by special interests, but these are solved through convoluted Keystone Cop farce situations. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 27, 2013, Came within the designated time and made a fantastic christmas gift. It started out with the hijacking of plane which was so stupid that it would have been funny if not for the severity of the crimes committed: terrorism, kidnapping, & the murder of a police officer. I'm so impressed with the complexity and intelligence both of the story/plot and the research going into everything from how a prosecutor's office works to how a small team of terrorists might take over an airliner. The author shared a fantastic story that kept you held in his grasp from start to finish and did so all the while I was thinking the story was coming to the end. I've read all the books Michael Gruber wrote under his own name, and started in on the series he ghosted for his cousin, Tanenbaum. There's another character we don't get to meet as early as we should, so again, a bit of suspense builds as we await his contributions to the plot. Really good book with a really exciting twist at the end.
I love reading legal thrillers and Joseph Teller is one of the best writers out there in this genre.
He hates the legal system but loves to be in the game. My least favorite; I thought it was too easy to figure out but still worth the read.

He niggles away at detail after detail and works his way through to the answer. Once again a satisfying read from Michael Gruber's potboiler days. In United States law, depraved-heart murder, also known as depraved-indifference murder, is a type of murder where an individual acts with a "depraved indifference" to human life and where such act results in a death, despite that individual not explicitly intending to kill. I think Joseph Teller is close to joining the elite among mystery writers. In true potboiler fashion, we are reintroduced to everyone remaining from the first Butch Karp novel. Nicely done. An exciting and complex continuation of the series featuring the NYC DA's office.
